From the direction of electronic duos such as Kruder & Dorfmeister and Beaver & Krause comes Wide Hive's latest find, Cubik & Origami. Being both DJs and musicians, Cubik & Origami balance up-tempo dance grooves with chill downtempo, weaving together a solid debut effort that is reminiscent of early Kraftwerk or, more recently, Poets of Rhythm.
Between them, the duo plays every instrument on the record, which includes (but is not limited to) guitar, bass, Rhodes, drums, percussion, vintage synthesizers, turntables and samplers.
EP I and EP II have five tracks each (four that are included on the CD – and each EP contains one exclusive track available only on that title). The CD contains three exclusive tracks not available on either EP.
EP I is more downtempo, while EP II is more up-tempo and contains the Cubik & Origami remix of Calvin Keys’ “Vertical Clearance.”
As modern music continues to blend the boundaries of hip-hop, electronica, world and pop/rock, authentic amalgamations are increasingly rare. Cubik & Origami are the exception, and so are naturally connected to Wide Hive’s funky slant on contemporary downtempo.
Cubik & Origami had an underground success with It’s Complicated, their self-published LP. Cubik & Origami currently have a strong following both among audiences and DJs, and are new additions to San Francisco’s
Ambient Mafia. Wide Hive Records was an URB Next 100 for 2004.
Press Quotes
“This is a confident, pretty, and ethereal (yet grounded) record that lifts off a few miles north of the Bourbon Street jazz clubs with live drums that carry a wicked studio punch.” – SFR News
