Ensemble Arte Musica/Francesco Cera, organ & director

18 selections by Andrea Gabrieli, Giovanni Gabrieli,Monteverdi, Cavalli, Castello, Frescobaldi, Sances & Grandi

Sacred songs for solo voice appeared in Italy at the beginning of the seventeenth century, at the same time as the earliest operas. In 1625, Leonardo Simonetti, one of the castrati at St.Mark’s in Venice, edited the first anthology dedicated entirely to the solo motet, Ghirlanda Sacra scielta da diversi Eccellentissimi Compositori de varii Motetti à Voce sola. Monteverdi was the reference model. In Ghirlanda Sacra four of his motets for tenor are symbolically placed at the beginning of the book, and are followed by forty pieces by twenty-six young composers.
