 On the follow-up to his 2006 Independent Music Award-winning album UNDER THE BODHI TREE, Jonathan Still crafts another absorbing atmosphere that shows his mastery of mood and sonic texture. In many ways, THE AWAKENING builds off the themes introduced on the previous album, featuring a blend of guitar, piano, keyboard ambience, rhythm and voice. One difference between the two is that THE AWAKENING manages to be a somewhat eclectic album. The early cuts have a strong pop edge to them, and even a hint of rock creeping into the mix, whereas the album's second half travels in a dreamy direction, with songs like "Fly Away" and "Ascent" having a very chilled, relaxed feel. Capping the album off is "To Health and Peace," which utilizes strings, dramatic percussion and pennywhistle to create an epic finale. |
