Item Details
In 1967, Tom Zé created the Tropicalia movement along with Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. The movement called for both a new aesthetic and a new Brazil at a time when the country was under the thumb of a military dictator. In 1990, David Byrne played an instrumental role in troublemaker Tom Zé’s comeback by producing several of his albums. • Whimsical and provocative, Tom Zé’s music is impossible to classify. Though rooted in the tradition of the northeast where he grew up, it’s been shaped by the hyper-urban environment of Săo Paulo, where he now lives. Lyonel Kouro uses painting and a scratch technique on 35 mm film to create the visual universe that permeates this film. In an interview with Rémy Kolpa Kopoul (Radio Nova’s renowned “connector”), Tom Zé talks about women, Brazil, and himself. Portuguese with English/French subtitles. Stereo 5.1 Sound. Playable in all regions. Approx run time: 47 min.

Featured Songs: Ave Dor Maria • Mulher Navio Negreiro • Proposta De Amor • Pagode-Enredo Dos Tempos Do Medo • O Amor e Um Rock • O Pib Da Pib • Elaeu • Feira de Santana

“One of Tropicalia’s oddest and most fascinating artists since the 1960s … often compared to American innovators like Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa.” — PopMatters

“Tom Zé began his career together with Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Maria Bethânia. As a composer, he influenced Caetano and many others and delivered an expressive body of work through his own discography. A restless thinker, he was adept at modern erudite music experimentations, yet he was always ignored by both industry and audiences until he was discovered by David Byrne.” — All Music Guide
