The recent disaster in Haiti is incredibly tragic and is a huge blow to this extremely impoverished and phenomenally culturally rich country, and we here at NAIL Distribution, along with our partners feel very deeply for the people of Port-Au-Prince and the rest of this island nation.
Below is an article taken from the Huffington Post describing this tragedy:
“An earthquake centered near the impoverished Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince caused the collapse of several buildings and an unknown number of fatalities Tuesday. The quake measured 7.0 on the Richter scale and at least 1.8 million people live within the area where the earthquake had its highest intensity.
President Obama said on Tuesday that his "thoughts and prayers" were with the people of Haiti. "We are closely monitoring the situation and we stand ready to assist the people of Haiti," Obama said in a statement. The Obama administration said that the State Department, USAID and the U.S. military were working to coordinate an assessment of the situation and any possible assistance.”
We urge everyone to do their part in assisting in this tragedy.
Thank You.
From the time that Alan Lomax left his position as head of the Archive
of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress in 1942 through the
end of his long career, he amassed one of the most important collections
of ethnographic material in the world. It includes more than 5,000 hours
of sound recordings, 400,000 feet of motion picture film, hundreds of
photographic prints and negatives, over 120 linear feet of correspondence,
field notes, research files, and much more.
While recording for the Library of Congress in the 1930s, Lomax made
trips to Haiti and the Bahamas. The recordings made in Haiti in 1936–37
provide a window on Haitian expressive culture recorded soon after the
departure of the American Marines, while Haiti was in the throes of a
nationalist and africentric movement. This groundbreaking production of
the story, the sounds, and the sights of the legendary musicologist’s trip to
Haiti features 10 CDs, two books containing extensive notes and Lomax’s
journal, a replication of the map he used (with added notations), color
video footage, and hours of amazing, never-before-heard music that no
longer exists on earth!

“Alan Lomax was capturing the
human spirit in song … The music
moves us … not only because
the traditions it documents are
disappearing, but because it lives and
breathes anew each time it’s heard.”
