The Kelpie is a beast from Scottish mythology; a horse with the skin of a seal who drowns visitors by tempting them to ride on its back. The infectious music of Kerstin Blodig and Ian Melrose was also designed to tempt listeners, though the pair's intentions are far more welcoming than those of the Kelpie. THE KELPIE features thirteen acoustic songs that capture the whimsy of Celtic lore and the earthy beauty of Celtic folk music. Blodig's musical approach blends her Scandinavian heritage with Celtic leanings - this fusion is particularly noticeable in her vocals, which have a particularly Norwegian lilt, with a touch of Irish charm. Blodig also plays mandolin, bouzouki, guitar and bodhran on the album. Melrose is a world-class acoustic guitarist, and his warm, reserved tone helps to give the music an air of mystery. The songs are mostly themed after Nordic folklore and Scottish traditional tales, offering compelling stories about figures, beasts and creatures from both backdrops. Besides the music, the CD features a bonus video for "Kraka," playable on most computers. |

A kelpie is a spirit in Scottish mythology that appears at the waterside disguised as a beautiful white horse. Once the horse is mounted, the unsuspecting rider is taken to the bottom of the loch, never to be seen again. In Norway, the same spirit is called Nøkken. The spirit is very musical, being a master of fiddle-playing, and often plays beautiful melodies in order to attract human beings. As this creature is found in both Celtic and Scandinavian mythology, it is a fitting symbol for the music created by Kerstin Blodig and Ian Melrose, who combine material from these two cultures with their own musical backgrounds and arrangements.
Blodig has a particular fascination with Norwegian folk music. She is involved in a wide variety of projects, ranging from studio work and theatre music productions to the Celtic groups Norland Wind, Talking Water, Touchwood and her new solo project, Valivann. Melrose belongs to the cream of Europe's acoustic guitarists. He is an internationally acclaimed composer and arranger as well as lead guitarist with the groups Clannad, Norland Wind and Talking Water. His compositions blend Irish dances, Scottish ballads and Classical formats with Brazilian samba and Argentine tango to create a very real, unique form of World music.
This disc features children's songs, poems, dances, fairy tales and ballads, as well as songs inspired by Jethro Tull and Dizzy Gillespie. Like the spirit from which they take their name, Blodig and Melrose lure the unsuspecting...into becoming fans! After this acoustic experience, you'll never be the same again!
