Norland Wind is a synergy of talented acoustic folk musicians who make music inspired by the Northwestern region of Ireland. Led by harpist Thomas Loefke, the band weaves a tapestry of beautiful traditional instruments, largely string based, that captures the charm of Ireland. Loefke's harp plays a central role on ATLANTIC DRIFTWOOD, lending each piece a tranquil, haunting backbone that entrances the listener. Padraig Duggan brings the mandolin, Noel Duggan is featured on guitar, Ian Melrose plays guitar and tin whistle, celebrated fiddle and violin player Maire Breatnach lends her talents to the mix and Kerstin Blodig's various strings and vocals all add to the warm, pastoral sound. The album's mood is mellow and bittersweet, with a mix of airs and midtempo pieces that possess a Clannad feel. |

The Celtic Northwest of Ireland--with its
Irish language, folklore, legends, its treasure
of traditional songs and melodies and its
majestic landscape--provides inspiration for
the compositions of Norland Wind featuring
harpist Thomas Loefke.
Donegal born Noel and Padraig Duggan,
also members of the Irish cult group
Clannad, lend a strong Celtic element to the
group's repertoire with songs in their native
Irish language. Haunting harp instrumentals
mostly written by Loefke or melodies by
Scottish guitarist Ian Melrose, songs composed
by singer/guitarist Kerstin Blodig and
a fresh approach to traditional material are
the main features of Atlantic Driftwood.
The Celtic harp is central to the sound of
Norland Wind. The harp, Kerstin Blodig's
clear, expressive voice, Noel Duggan's
earthy baritone, the compact guitar and
keyboard arrangements and vocal harmony
blend to create a uniquely evocative and
emotionally powerful sound.
Atlantic Driftwood was recorded in Dublin
between August 1998 and September 2000
and features 12 original compositions and 4
traditionals.
Riverdance violinist Maire Breatnach, legendary
piper Finbar Furey and again keyboard
player Ciaran Brennan (Clannad) are
among the guest musicians.
