Mamadou Diabate is a young Malian kora player and composer descended from a long line of Manding musician-storytellers, the jeli (sometimes referred to by the French term, "griot"). His cousin, Toumanik Diabte, has named him jeli kujan, "tall jeli."
Like most kora performers, Mamadou is a self-taught musician. Although his performance on the kora is deeply rooted in the keita style, he also incorporates innovative elements like American blues, Bambara music (a pentatonic style from Mali) and the faster Gambian style of kora playing.
Since 1996, Mamadou has been living in the U.S. and has collaborated with American artists like jazz musician Randy Weston and blues performer Guy Davis.
On his first solo album, recorded for Alula Records, Mamadou is accompanied by Famoro Diabate (Guinea) on balafon, Fousseyni Kouyate (Mali) on ngoni, Cheick Barry (Guinea) on electric bass and by African-American acoustic bass player Ira Coleman.
