PREGARDIEN: TEN/GEES: PNO
DIE SCHONE MULLERIN [SACD]
CHR-Challenge Records
Allegro Price: $15.98

With this performance of the immortal Müllerin, Christoph Prégardien plants a remarkably bright, clearly waving flag amidst his many fine recordings as well as in the worldwide discography of this famous song cycle. Accompanied by one of his two favorite pianists, this is a historically reliable, recently recorded performance.

Featured Artists:
Christoph Prégardien: tenor
Michael Gees: pianos

SCHUBERT: Die schöne Müllerin D795 (Op. 25)—complete song cycle

“Mr. Prégardien, who has an important European career, has only recently been singing in North America. But his recordings have won him admirers here. His light, lyric tenor voice is focused and warm. The top notes are sometimes a bit tight. But it is the character of his artistry, not exquisite vocalism, that makes him a great lieder singer. He shapes phrases with arching lyricism and delivers words with incisiveness. His singing is poised yet urgent. When he sings a Schubert song, the text leaps from the stage.” — New York Times

ADIOS NONINO
FGL-Fuga Libera (Outhere)
Allegro Price: $15.18

A string quintet, a grand piano, and the fluttering chromatic accordion of leader Christophe Delporte: at first sight Astoria’s approach is classical, like the background of its members. The group’s first Piazzolla CD was awarded Disc of the Month in October 2006 by Argentine tango magazine La Salida. This second album, with the added sensation of percussionist Santo Scinta, was recorded during a concert at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles.

HENDRICKS, BARBARA: SOP
AVE MARIA
AVE-Arte Verum
Allegro Price: $7.98

Barbara Hendricks pays a memorable homage to the melodic genius of Franz Schubert in a 20-minute CD of five Lieder including the celebrated Ave Maria, a work inseparable from the Swedish soprano’s repertoire.

Featured Artists
Barbara Hendricks: soprano
Roland Pöntinen: piano

SCHUBERT: Ave Maria • Heiß mich nicht reden • So laßt mich scheinen • Kennst du das Land • Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt

“Barbara Hendricks’ voice, above all, is gorgeous, a glowing and vulnerable instrument with thrilling range, overflowing with emotion in its upper register. Her intonation and control is virtually flawless … and she brings a volatile earthiness to her readings.” — All Music Guide
