STIERS, DAVID OGDEN
FERDINAND THE BULL AND FRIENDS
To Market Kids
Join David Ogden Stiers and company for a charming mixture of classical music and story. FERDINAND THE BULL AND FRIENDS begins with a rousing recitation of the Spanish story of "Ferdinand the Bull," a bull unlike his peers. Rather than enjoying rough-housing and head-butting, Ferdinand was a peaceful bull who preferred to relax under a tree and smell the flowers. When his alarmed reaction to a bee-sting brings him to the attention of bullfighting recruiters, he finds himself amidst the pageantry of the bull-ring, but will he fight? The program then continues with Saint-Saens' "Carnival of the Animals" suite (featuring the poetry of Ogden Nash) and Ravel's "Mother Goose" suite. In each, Stiers provides narration while Nina Flyer performs on cello and Chie Nagatani plays piano. A memorable blend of story and song that offers helps bolster an appreciation for classical music. |

JUICE BOX HEROES
LOOSE TOOTH
To Market Kids
The Juice Box Heroes are back, and once again they are reinventing pop music from the '80s as creative, humorous kid's music. Like their celebrated debut NO SUGAR ADDED, LOOSE TOOTH features a set of familiar melodies at its core, like Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days" or Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round," whose arrangements closely mirror the originals. Lyrically, the songs are completely new experience, offering catchy, goofy verses with themes that kids can relate to. Like "Footloose," which here becomes "Loose Tooth" - an ode to wiggly incisors and the Tooth Fairy. Or Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," re-worked as "Don't Stop Reading." Across the board, the songs bound along with giddy glee, giving power pop music and healthy dose of adolescent charm. |

SECRET AGENT 23 SKIDOO
UNDERGROUND PLAYGROUND
Koch Records
It's inevitable that today's kids will become acquainted with hip-hop music at one point or another. Of course, parents will understandably blanch at some of the lyrics. Luckily, the stealthy Secret Agent 23 Skidoo is ready to infiltrate, giving you a family-friendly choice to mature-themed mainstream rappers. The great thing about the music of this rapper and new father is that the music is real hip-hop, not a watered down kindie alternative. The beats are funky, scratching is omnipresent and 23 Skidoo is clearly well-schooled in rap and rhyme. The only difference between this album and that of its radio-played brethren is the lyrics - all of 23 Skidoo's raps focus on topics like self-esteem, friendship, surmounting obstacles and having good clean fun. Throw in some interesting musical elements like reggae, Latin jazz and bluegrass, and you have a prime example of how hip-hop music can be perfect for the under ten set. |

BANANA SLUG STRING BAND
ONLY ONE OCEAN
Slug Music
The ecology-minded Banana Slug String Band, whose music
shows how much fun it can be to learn about science and the
environment, is gearing up for a deep sea dive! ONLY ONE
OCEAN features fourteen high-energy songs that teach children
about aquatic life. The idea for the album came about while
the band was snorkeling in Hawaii, and producer/guitarist/vocalist "Solar" Steve
Van Zandt witnessed a turtle trying to eat a plastic bag,
believing it to be a jellyfish. It prompted a song ("Turtle
Ate A Jelly") and also gave the band the idea to make an
entire album that taught kids about the wonders of the ocean
and the need to keep it safe. The songs feature creative
lyrics about topics like whales, the purpose of sand, the
vastness of the ocean and plankton, each with a touch of
playful humor and plenty of educational nuggets, made easily
to remember by the catchiness of the songs. The arrangements
maintain a sense of upbeat enjoyment, with a variety of influences
coming into play, like bluegrass, African music, Caribbean
elements and Cajun. Includes guests George Winston, Beausoleil
and others. |

Milton's Secret
Monroe Products
MILTON'S SECRET introduces children to Eckhart Tolle's philosophy about embracing the present moment. Of course, this is a rather weighty topic; so to make more easily understandable, Tolle and Robert S. Friedman have wrapped the message of presence in an enjoyable tale of a young boy named Milton. Milton is afraid of going to school because of a bully. With the help of his kind grandfather and several other friends along the way, Milton learns that he has a light inside of him. When he gets afraid, he can focus on that light. After the initial story, Milton divulges his secret to young listeners, walking them through a short meditation for learning to live in the present. The album ends with an elongated ambient track that can be used for kids while practicing the meditation. The track features Hemi-Sync's patented brainwave synchronization technology to open the mind to its full potential.

Fox
& Branch
Mama Don't Allow
To Market Kids
The children's music of folk duo Dave Fox and Will Branch calls to mind another era - the days before TV and the internet, when kids made their own fun and games. Their music is part acoustic folk, part bluegrass and part New Orleans jazz, all fused together to form an upbeat, accessible sound with a classic flavor. The songs themselves mostly consist of traditional old American folk tunes, some of which are very recognizable and others not so much. The pair has a lot of fun with "Bingo," adding cute asides to the main round, and provide their own unique spin to "Comin' Round the Mountain," displaying how easy it is to experiment with goofy lyrics. Other songs include "This Little Light of Mine," "Erie Canal," "Bill Grogan's Goat," "Swingin' On A Star" and more, each blending vibrant, exuberant instrumentation with Branch's warm voice and the duo's entertaining interplay.

Sarah
Pirtle
Pocketful of Wonder
Gentle Wind
Sarah Pirtle is a celebrated children's folk singer who has
received awards from The American Library Association, Oppenheim
Toy Portfolio, Parents' Choice and The Parent Council. POCKETFUL
OF WONDER specifically revels in the joy of spending time outdoors,
away from the television set and toy chest. From exploring the

there is much to be fascinated by outside. Pirtle sings about
these things with wide-eyed wonder and warm eagerness, as she
is joined on vocals by a children's chorus. The music is acoustic,
including the sounds of guitar, violin, mandolin, banjo and light
rhythm, giving some of the songs a mild bluegrass tinge. As an

Lanny
Sherwin
Meltdown
Koch Records
Lanny Sherwin's goal as a musician is to make children's music
that has universal appeal among children, while not being considered
unbearable by parents. How does he do this? By making music with
clever, catchy lyrics and upbeat arrangements, while not reveling
in some of the more "over the top" aspects of children's
music. MELTDOWN focuses heavily on the warm, likable vocals of
Sherwin and arrangements that are based on a classic pop/rock
sound with some country and occasional blues elements. A lot
of the songs have a message; like the title track, which tackles
the subject of dealing with anger, or "Your Mountain is
Waiting," with its message about reaching one's goals. It's
an educational, fun album that will find appeal among the whole
family.

Ralph's
World
All Around Ralph's World
Warner Brothers
Ralph's World is the brainchild of indie rocker, composer and
playwright Ralph Covert (formerly of modern rock group The Bad
Examples). When deciding to embark on making children's music,
Covert chose to maintain the same infectious, high energy pop-rock
music his group was known for, only substituting the lyrics for
something more akin to the under-10 set. The results have been
impressive - he was nominated for a Grammy, won several awards
and has released a series of well-received albums. ALL AROUND
RALPH'S WORLD offers music that is quintessential Covert - powerful,
catchy refrains, music that thematically spans genres (from rock
to folk to country), plenty of peppy instrumentation and a sound
that engages kids as well as their parents. Covert and crew sing
