LORDS OF ACID
DEEP CHILLS
MTP-Metropolis Records
Allegro Price: $13.19
Lords of Acid, the Belgian electro-industrial-techno outfit fronted by the legendary
Praga Khan, has returned with Deep Chills, the outfit’s first new album in
12 years. Khan & longtime collaborator Erhan Kurkun (music and arrangements)
follow up the smash success of the comeback single Little Mighty Rabbit with
an all-new sonic orgy. From the Our Little Secret-era bounce of “Pop That
Tooshie” to the driven, acid-house-flavored, anthemic beats of “Children
of Acid” and the elecro-rock vibe of “Love Bus,” Deep Chills offers an innovative,
updated take on the deviant sounds that make Lords of Acid so loved. Not
ones to shy away from a little experimentation, Khan and Co. expand their
musical repertoire in all sorts of interesting directions. The surf rock
and punk flavored “Surfin’ Hedgehog” will have you singing along instantly.
The alt-country tinged “Slip N Slide” answers the question “What if Cowboy
Junkies wrote really, really dirty songs?” The track “Paranormal Activity” features
guest vocals by Zak Bagans (TV Host/Producer for Ghost Adventures and Paranormal
Challenge, NY Times best-selling author of Dark World) and blends dark, menacing,
stabbing trip-hop, haunting synths, and classic Lords of Acid grooves. Now,
despite numerous lineup changes, world tours, over 2.5 million album sales,
and every possible point of crisis and conflict a band can face, Lords of
Acid returns with a new crew of deviants, dilettantes, and sonically transmitted
diseases.

BLUE STAHLI
BLUE STAHLI
CDW-Celldweller Productions
Allegro Price: $11.18
Blue Stahli arrives at your party in suave style, with a bombshell on each
arm and martini in hand—but by night’s end he will be throwing
burning couches into your pool. Such is the one-two punch of the debut self-titled
album, 10 tracks of cathartically vengeful alternative rock with a streak of
Ray-Bansporting electro-funk that gives it a sexiness punk never had. Stahli
doesn’t shy away from playing with the reigning dance styles of our day,
but each track retains the distinct flavor that wrenches your head open, climbs
in, and uses your brainy bits to pantomime Pete Townsend’s entire history
of guitar-smashing. With powerful vocal hooks and a knack for hybridizing genres—such
as album closer “Give Me Everything You’ve Got’s” epic
flash-bang of frenetic punk riffage and dubstep bass warble—Blue Stahli
is an album aimed squarely at the front lines of alternative music.

STONE AXE
II
RPL-Ripple Music
Allegro Price: $15.98
Following the band’s critically-acclaimed debut album, Stone Axe returns with an album so steeped in ’70s rock ‘n’ roll that one might feel the urge to feather their hair, break out the denim vest, and fire up the Camero! This two-disc deluxe CD set features the original album, which celebrates everything that we’ve come to love about rock music as rock preservationist and bandleader Tony Reed channels his collective influences to near-perfection. The second disc includes over an hour of bonus material that was previously only available on the band’s vinyl releases and various compilations.

MOOG, THE
SEASONS IN THE UNDERGROUND
MSR-MuSick Recordings, Inc.
Allegro Price: $8.79
If you dare to touch the pen of the menacing Statue
of Anonymous that sits in the court of Vajdahunyad Castle in
Budapest, it is said to make you a better writer. The Moog,
who hail from Hungary’s biggest city, have had the unfair
advantage of hanging out with the mystery man their entire
teenage lives, and it left a mark. With the release of their
third full-length, the band is set to claim its title as the
country’s hottest commodity! The Moog combine the sexiness
of dirty garage rock with warm synth fuzz and massive pop hooks
to bypass the dark matter of familiarity in their genre. The
boys are no strangers to working with the biggest names in
the industry; their last two albums include collaborations
with Jack Endino (renowned for his work on Nirvana’s
Bleach) and Geoff Ott (Queens of the Stone Age, Mark Lanegan).
This time around, The Moog went after the man that inspired
them, Ken Scott, who has engineered albums by The Beatles,
Jeff Beck, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, and more. The Moog
encapsulated Scott’s unique vision and created their
own version of rock ‘n’ roll essence, and Seasons
in the Underground is the sound of a band leaving behind comparisons
to incite their own sonic revolution. |
